In the first half, he issued two yellow cards within a single minute; by the final whistle, he had shown a total of six. His assertive, no‑nonsense style quickly went viral on Chinese social media, topping the trending charts.

The match marked a historic milestone for Chinese football officiating: for the first time ever, three Chinese match officials worked together in a World Cup fixture. Ma took the head referee role, with Zhou Fei as assistant referee and Fu Ming serving as video assistant referee (VAR).

马宁，1979年6月出生于辽宁阜新，2011年获得国际足联（国际级裁判员）执裁资格。

2022年卡塔尔世界杯，43岁的马宁首次入围正赛裁判员阵容，但未能获得主裁比赛的机会，最终以第四官员身份参与多场比赛执裁工作。
Ma Ning, 47, from Fuxin, Liaoning province, became the first Chinese referee to take charge of a World Cup match since 2002. He is also the only Chinese referee to have been selected for two consecutive World Cups – having been part of the 2022 Qatar World Cup panel, where he served as fourth official in six matches.
当时很多人断定马宁不会再参加下一届世界杯，但马宁说， “我是一个不太服输的人，我当时心里想一定要把不可能变成可能。”

今年，47岁的马宁首次以主裁判身份入选世界杯裁判名单。
出征美加墨世界杯前，马宁表示：“我们这些年一直在努力，就是想让大家知道中国裁判有能力站上世界足球的最高舞台。世界杯期间，我们会向世界上最优秀的裁判认真学习，并把宝贵的经验带回中国，为中国裁判培养和发展贡献力量。 我们也会全力以赴在世界杯赛场上展现中国裁判的风采。 ”
Before departing for the World Cup, Ma said the Chinese officials were determined to prove themselves on football's biggest stage.
"During the World Cup, we will learn from the world's best referees and bring valuable experience back to China to contribute to the training and development of Chinese referees," he said.
"We will also do our utmost to showcase the professionalism and spirit of Chinese referees on the World Cup stage."
